Skyrim VR... Day 24

I was reading about improving the archery experience in Skyrim VR and reddit suggested the following .ini file settings… I don’t know if they actually helped or if it was just a placebo, but it seemed I was missing less? Maybe?

Anyway, so there I was in the northwestern mountains just near a cave, so I figured I should go check it out and clear it of whatever bandits were in there.

But it was empty.

Suspiciously empty.

I looked around, and there was one of those walls that appear to be normal walls except for a suspicious outline around the edge.

So I looked for a switch or pressure plate, and eventually found an interactive fire pit. Apparently putting a glowing mushroom in said pit activated the door.

I don’t know why burned mushrooms would open doors, but I’ll roll with it.

Wandered into the secret part of the cave and suddenly there were some giant mosquito’s up in my face looking for a feed, followed not long after by some kind of giant beetle who was also hungry.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, a Falmer jumped down from above and gave me a heck of a jump scare.

After clearing up that initial ambush, we explored the cave more carefully. The next lot of sneaky Falmer ambushed us, but couldn’t see us (I’m even sneakier), and thus ate my arrows point blank.

Cleared the cave of Falmer, mosquitos, and beetles, grabbed some chitin… surely that will be useful for something?

Then back out into the wilderness.

Headed over a mountain pass and found a ruined tower. I was like, okay, let’s check it out… stepped around the corner and oh my. There was a snow troll party!

Must have been a half dozen of them, perhaps more. I panicked and tossed fireballs then got out my flaming sword and went all hack and slash and turned their party into a bloodbath.

Caught my breath for a moment then went looking for the next quest marker which was supposed to be right there… but I couldn’t find it. There was a steep cliff, so I figured it was at the bottom.

Found a less-steep path and ran down to the bottom, but no… no sign of the entrance.

There was a second quest in the area however, had to rescue someone who had been taken prisoner by some elven soldiers.

I talked to the elf at the gate of the fortress and he was all ‘move along’.

So I killed him and tried to sneak in.

It didn’t work.

Next time I talked to the elf at the gate of the fortress, skipped his dialog, then tried to fight my way in.

It didn’t work.

In fact, I got a bit excited in the chaos and bashed the controller into my exercise machine and then the haptic feedback rumble thing was making some very strange noises and feeling a bit broken.

I tried whacking it a couple of different ways, shaking it. Eventually I pondered if maybe the battery was unseated and causing the rattle… so removed and re-added the battery and… voila! Working properly.

That was lucky! I was not looking forward to having to try and repair my controller.

Third time around, I didn’t bother talking to the guard, I just shot him in the face. And the two guards on the rampart. And the guard by the door. And then we got noticed and got into a big fight again, but this time the only casualties were the elves.

After all that, it turns out there was a back door that I could have snuck into and bypassed the whole fight. But then I wouldn’t have replenished my arrows, so it was probably better taking the hollywood option.

Went in the back door, killed a few elves, freed a few prisoners, found the guy I was looking for. He wanted out… and I mean I could have walked him back to the back door, but since I’d already killed most of the elves in the place, I figured we might as well finish the job.

So we went out the front door, leaving the place devoid of life.

He was thankful, but wanted me to warn his family in Whiterun that they would not be safe, since they will try to reacquire him there… so I added that to my to-do list and went looking for this cave entrance that I couldn’t find.

Looking up the cliff from below, I could see a platform near the top, so I had to climb all the way back up again, then down a path I had missed to the platform and into the cave.

Inside was only one fellow, a conjurer or necromancer by the looks of it. He didn’t even know we were there. We retrieved the axe that the dog wanted me to find, and headed out.

Next stop Solitude.
